Background:
Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander, 1786) is commonly known as the lobed star coral. M. "annularis" is often used to refer to a three species complex of three genotypically-similar coral species (also including M. faveolata and M. franksii). They are dominant reef building corals throughout the reefs of the western Atlantic Ocean. These corals have proven to be susceptible to a number of coral diseases including black band disease, white plague, and yellow band syndrome.
